Why St. Cloud Homeowners Trust Opie’s Gold for AC Installation

Opie’s Gold Heat n’ Air is a family-owned HVAC company based right here in St. Cloud, MN. We install, replace, and service central air conditioning systems across Saint Cloud, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, Waite Park, St. Joseph, Cold Spring, Foley, Rice, Rockville, Clearwater, Becker, Big Lake, Avon, and Albany — and we’ve seen what actually works in homes built for Minnesota winters and Minnesota summers.

If you want the most comfort and value for the money you spend on a new air conditioner, call Opie’s Gold. These are our principles and this is our process:

Ten people in uniform stand in front of two vans displaying promotional text for Opie's Gold, capturing the spirit of Minnesota.

We listen FIRST. Tell us the problems, what you wish was different, and what your ideal outcome looks like. (We’ll even listen to personal problems — we just can’t fix those.)

We figure out what’s more cost effective. Sometimes a repair and an Opiefication will save you a LOT of money. Sometimes a new install is the smarter spend — more efficiency, fewer breakdowns, problems actually solved. We’ll tell you which one, honestly.

We size your AC for your specific home. Proper sizing is the biggest factor most contractors get wrong — and the easiest way to overpay on your energy bills for the next 15 years.

We ask the questions other contractors don’t. Hot upstairs bedrooms? Loud condenser? Humidity issues? Those answers change what we recommend.

We install it right the first time. A properly installed AC can use up to 50% less energy and last nearly twice as long as a sloppy job.

How We Perform a Comprehensive Assessment

We take detailed measurements of all your doors and windows, determine how much you run your AC, account for cooling loss, combined with seer efficiency and many other factors to figure out how big a system you need. This process can save you a LOT of money.

We’re so precise (and so committed to discovering what is best for you, your family and your home) we designed a True Cost Calculator to analyze your current system accordingly to these criteria:

  1. Life remaining
  2. Cost of repair today
  3. Utility overpayment
  4. Future repairs
  5. Sub-total (lines 2+3+4)
  6. Inflation _____% x (sub-total)
  7. Total cost to keep current system

Then we share the results with you, including what the perfect-sized system for your home would be and leave the rest up to you.

It’s your home… you be the judge.

What to Expect on AC Installation Day

We don’t believe in surprises. Here’s exactly what happens when Opie’s Gold installs your AC:

  1. Free in-home assessment. A technician — not a commission salesperson — walks the house, measures, performs the sizing calculation, and writes you a flat-rate quote on the spot.
  2. Equipment scheduled and delivered. Once you approve the quote, we order your system and confirm an install date that works for you.
  3. Install day, morning. Floors and walkways covered. Old refrigerant recovered and disposed per EPA rules. Old condenser and indoor coil removed.
  4. Install day, midday. New condenser placed on pad, new indoor coil installed, new line set run, electrical and condensate verified.
  5. Install day, afternoon. System charged, tested, and commissioned. We measure superheat/subcool, verify airflow, and don’t leave until the home is cooling properly.
  6. Walkthrough. Before we go, we show you the new thermostat, registers, and filter location — and answer every question.

Most installs take 6–8 hours. We clean up. You barely know we were there.

The Cost of New AC Installation

There’s no honest one-size-fits-all price for AC installation — anyone quoting you over the phone without seeing your home is guessing. A handful of factors set the real number, and we walk you through each one during your free in-home estimate:

Type of system. Central air, heat pump, and ductless mini-split each sit at very different price points. The right one depends on your home, not just your budget — we’ll explain why during the visit.

Capacity (size). Measured in tons. Bigger homes need more cooling power. Going oversized is just as expensive as going undersized — the system short-cycles, wears out faster, and never dehumidifies properly.

Efficiency rating (SEER2). A higher-SEER2 system costs more up front but uses noticeably less electricity month to month. For most St. Cloud homes there’s a sweet spot in the middle — too low and you overpay on energy for 15 years; too high and the payback gets long.

Refrigerant. Newer systems use the lower-emission refrigerants required by EPA rules taking effect in 2025–2026. They run cleaner and more efficiently, but cost more up front than older R-410A units (which are being phased out anyway, so we usually steer toward the new ones).

Existing ductwork, thermostat, and electrical. If everything’s in good shape, you’re in the standard install range. If anything needs to be repaired or upgraded, the quote reflects it — line by line, up front, never as a surprise later.

Every Opie’s Gold quote is free, written, and flat-rate. Once you approve the number, the number doesn’t change.

Our Cooling System Installations are based on Central Minnesota Factors

Central Minnesota homes don’t behave like homes in Texas, Tennessee, or Wisconsin. After installing AC systems across St. Cloud, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, Waite Park, St. Joseph, Cold Spring, Foley, Rice, and the surrounding communities, a few local realities shape every recommendation we make:

Humidity off the Mississippi and area lakes. Two-stage and variable-speed systems dehumidify dramatically better than single-stage budget units — a real comfort difference in July and August that single-stage units simply can’t deliver.

Long heating season, short cooling season. Your AC sits unused for 7+ months a year. That’s why our installs include a first-year tune-up, and why we recommend enrolling in our annual maintenance plan to keep the manufacturer warranty valid.

Split-level and tri-level homes are common around here. These often benefit more from larger return ducts, zoning, or a properly sized two-stage system than from simply going up a ton on the condenser.

1970s–2000s housing stock often has marginal ductwork. We inspect the duct system as part of every estimate and tell you the truth — instead of upselling a 3-ton system the existing ducts can’t actually deliver to the back bedrooms.

Finished basements stay cold; upstairs bedrooms overheat. A single-stage budget AC can’t solve that. We’ll tell you whether a higher-efficiency system, a zoning add-on, or both is the right fix.

When you call Opie’s, you get a real person, a written quote, factory-trained technicians, and work backed by our labor warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does AC installation cost in St. Cloud, MN?
Most central AC installations throughout the Saint Cloud area range from several thousand dollars to considerably more depending on system size, efficiency rating, ductwork modifications, electrical upgrades, and the complexity of the installation. Opie’s Gold provides written estimates and upfront pricing before work begins.

How long does AC installation take?
Most residential air conditioning installations can be completed in a single day. Larger projects involving ductwork changes, zoning systems, or full HVAC replacements may take longer depending on the scope of work.

Can you install central AC in a home that doesn’t currently have it?
Yes. Homes with existing forced-air furnaces and ductwork can often have central air added. For homes without ductwork, ductless mini-split systems are often an effective cooling solution.

What size AC system does my home need?
Proper sizing depends on far more than square footage alone. Factors like insulation, windows, ceiling height, sun exposure, home layout, and airflow all affect system sizing. Oversized systems can actually create humidity and comfort problems, which is why proper evaluation matters.

What’s the difference between SEER and SEER2?
SEER2 is the updated HVAC efficiency standard used on modern air conditioning systems. It measures energy performance under more realistic operating conditions than the previous SEER rating system.

Do you offer financing for AC installation?
Yes. Financing options are available for qualified homeowners to help make new air conditioning installation more manageable.

Do you install air conditioners year-round?
Yes. Air conditioning installations are performed throughout the year, including spring, fall, and winter. Many homeowners choose to replace systems before peak summer demand arrives.

What brands of air conditioners do you install?
Opie’s Gold installs high-quality air conditioning systems designed for reliable cooling performance, energy efficiency, and long-term comfort. System recommendations are based on the home, budget, and installation goals.

Will a new AC system lower my energy bills?
In many cases, yes. Older air conditioners often lose efficiency as they age, especially systems more than 10–15 years old. Newer high-efficiency systems can reduce energy usage while improving cooling consistency and indoor comfort.

Should I replace my furnace at the same time as the AC?
Sometimes. If both systems are older or nearing the end of their lifespan, replacing them together can improve efficiency, compatibility, and long-term reliability. Recommendations depend on the condition and age of the existing equipment.
